 Family First

Wokingham’s Family First programme model of working with families was based on international research into affecting change with families who experience complex needs and find it difficult to affect change. This can best be summarised as a ‘restorative approach’ of ‘high challenge’ and ‘high support’.

The first two years of the programme (2012/13 and 2013/14) reported the following outcome changes for families:

Ø  91% of families significantly reduced (or stopped) their offending (sustained for a period of six to eighteen months);

Ø  62% of these families saw marked improvements in attendance from an average of 20% to over 85% attendance (improvement measured over the period of one academic year);

Ø  Over two thirds of children and young people reduced exclusions and increased attendance from an average of 20% to over 85% attendance (improvement measured over the period of one academic year)

Ø  41% of families with an adult entering into employment; many of these families were the first member of the family for three generations.
